What are Hormones?
The term hormone is derived from the Greek word, hormo, which means to set in motion. And that's precisely what hormones do in the body. They stimulate, regulate, and control the function of various tissues and organs. Made by specialized groups of cells called glands, hormones are involved in almost every biological process, including sexual reproduction, growth, metabolism, and immune function. These glands, including the pituitary, thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, and testes, release various hormones into the body as needed.
Levels of some hormones like testosterone, HGH, progesterone, melatonin, DHEA, and estrogen tend to decrease over time. In other cases, the body may fail to make enough of a hormone due to diseases and disorders that can develop as you age. When this occurs, hormone supplements -- pills, shots, topical (rub-on) gels, and medicated skin patches -- may be prescribed.
What are Bio-Identical Hormones?
Bio-identical hormones have the same chemical structure as hormones that are made by the human body. The term “bio-identical” does not indicate the source of the hormone but rather indicates that the chemical structure of the replacement hormone is identical to that of the hormone naturally found in the human body. In order for a replacement hormone to fully replicate the function of hormones which were naturally produced and present in the human body, the chemical structure must exactly match the original. Bio-Identical hormones are able to follow normal metabolic pathways so that essential active metabolites are formed in response to hormone replacement therapy.
Hormone replacement therapy
Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT, is beneficial to both men and women. It is the process of replacing the hormones that your body needs to function optimally and which decline in all of us as we age. Natural Hormones are molecule by molecule exactly the same hormones present in the human body which can be replaced as your own hormones begin to decline. At BodyFit Medical Center, your physician will assess your individual needs and work to restore these hormones during times when it is needed.
